Insider Tip What makes this guide different

The large distinctive rocks in the water are best photographed from waist-deep — wade out between them at golden hour and the composition essentially creates itself.

Porto Zoro — Golden Sand and Sculptural Rocks

Porto Zoro belongs to a category of beach that doesn’t need superlatives, because the visual evidence makes the argument itself: fine golden sand, crystal water in about seven shades of blue, and a collection of dramatic limestone and sandstone rocks rising from the shallows like abstract sculptures placed deliberately by someone with excellent taste. It’s one of the most photogenic beaches in Zakynthos, and it’s kept from becoming overwhelmed by being slightly harder to find than the main resort beaches.

What Awaits You

A 200-metre arc of fine golden sand on the eastern side of the Vassilikos peninsula, roughly 15 kilometres southeast of Zakynthos Town. The beach faces east, which means morning sun falls directly on it while afternoon brings softer, diffused light and some natural shade from the low vegetation behind the sand.

The defining feature is the rocks. Several large limestone and sandstone boulders and small formations sit in the water, some barely above the surface, others rising a metre or two. They create natural snorkelling zones, break the swell, and produce the visual drama that makes Porto Zoro photographs instantly recognisable. Between the rocks, the sand bottom is pale and the water glows.

Sunbed and umbrella rentals are available. A small taverna/café operates in season. The scale is human — this isn’t a full resort beach — and the atmosphere is calm.

Snorkelling

The rocks in and near the water are the focal point for snorkellers. Sea grass beds, bream, wrasse, and occasional moray eels inhabit the base of the larger formations. Visibility is consistently good. The area between the rocks and the shore, where the sandy bottom is shallow, is excellent for children learning to snorkel.

Getting There

From Zakynthos Town, take the main road south toward Argassi and continue onto the Vassilikos peninsula road. After the village of Vassilikos, follow signs for Porto Zoro. Total distance: around 17 kilometres, journey time 25 minutes. There’s a small parking area; in peak season it fills by 10 AM.

Accommodation Nearby

The Vassilikos peninsula has some of Zakynthos’ best small hotels and boutique accommodation — away from the main resort noise, set among olive groves and vineyards, within 5 minutes of multiple beaches. Porto Zoro is the centrepiece beach of this area.

Best Time to Visit

May and June for the best light and manageable crowds. July-August is busy but the beach has sufficient space. September is excellent — the sea is at peak warmth and the summer crowds have thinned. For photography, morning (7-9 AM before other visitors arrive) or late afternoon (the rocks catch the golden hour light beautifully).
